Metropolis Ensemble is a professional chamber orchestra and ensemble dedicated to making classical music in its most contemporary forms.
Thanks to the Cary New Music Performance Fund’s strong support of Metropolis Ensemble’s artistic activities, we were able achieve one of our most ambitious seasons to date.
Some of these season highlights include:
Producing our first staged, full-length contemporary opera.
In collaboration with the Royal Opera House in London, Opera North, The Opera Group, and The New Victory Theatre, Metropolis Ensemble performed the U.S. Premiere of David Bruce’s new children’s opera entitled “The Firework Maker’s Daughter”. This production was premiered in London at the Royal Opera House, in tour across the U.K., and then staged in New York City at the New Victory Theater. The opera garnered fantastic reviews in the U.K. and was the subject of a Wall Street Journal feature article. In addition to reaching thousands of young children (and their parents!), we were especially honored by this extraordinary opportunity as David Bruce has been a long-time member of our composer roster.
Winning Canada’s prestigious “Juno Award” for “Dreamscapes”, our second studio album with Naxos.
In the fall of 2012, Metropolis Ensemble released our second studio album on the new Canadian Classics imprint on Naxos Records featuring new music by Vivian Fung. We were thrilled when later that year, Fung’s Violin Concerto, a work commissioned, premiered, and recorded by Metropolis Ensemble (Kristin Lee, solo violin and Metropolis concertmaster) won in the category “Best Classical Composition”. Many new opportunities have subsequently opened for Vivian and Kristin, two long-standing core members of our community!
Collaborating with Nonesuch Records for our third studio album.
In the summer of 2013, Metropolis Ensemble successfully released our third studio album project in a new collaboration with Nonesuch Records. Entitled Home Stretch, the album featured new music by one of our roster composers Timothy Andres, including two works commissioned and premiered by Metropolis Ensemble. The album was recorded at Tanglewood’s renowned Ozawa Hall with producer David Frost.
Creating and producing concert events featuring 9 commissions and 10 premieres.
New works featuring composers Mohammed Fairouz, Vivian Fung, Ryan Francis, Caroline Shaw, Sayo Kosugi, Nicholas Britell, Brad Balliett, David Bruce, Timothy Andres, and David Babin were presented in concerts throughout New York City. Soloists included vocalists tKiera Duffy, Kate Lindsay, the indie-band BabX from Paris, violinist Kristin Lee, and pianists Conor Hanick and Timothy Andres.
Heartfelt gratitude to New Music USA’s strong advocacy and dedicated support for the creation of new music within our entrepreneurial, grass-root, artist-led community. Thank you!!
