Event Information

MATA presents its fifth annual MATA Jr. Festival in partnership with the Kaufman Music Center’s teen new-music ensemble Face the Music on Monday, November 19th at 7:00 pm at ShapeShifter Lab (18 Whitwell Place). “When we conceived of MATA Jr. in 2014,” says MATA Director Todd Tarantino, “we all agreed that pre-college composers — particularly those with limited exposure to compositional development programs — should have a chance to hear their music with real instruments, that performers should be their peers, and that mentors should act as guides, rather than teachers. We wanted a model of progressive education in which all participants were equal partners.” The culmination of a six-month mentorship process, the event will feature Face the Music performing newly composed works by six young composers ranging in age from eleven to eighteen selected from a global search together with music of their mentors, MATA-alumni composers Murat Çolak (MATA 2017), Molly Herron (MATA 2017), and Shawn Jaeger (MATA 2018).

Newly Composed Works by selected Pre-College Composers:

Gabriel Crist of Durham, NC (b. 2003): Quartet
Tyson Davis of Winston-Salem, NC (b. 2000): Microludes
Abby Harris of Queens, NY (b. 2005) Pachyderm
Katie Jenkins of Pontypridd, Wales (b. 1999): Sleeping Silent
Winston Schneider of Omaha, NE (b.2007): Insect Suite
Emily Singleton of Gainesville, FL (b. 2002): Urban Miniatures

Works by MATA mentors:

Murat Çolak (MATA 2017): Work TBD

The program will be performed without intermission and runs approximately seventy-five minutes.
