On Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the University of Texas at San Antonio, UTSA faculty artists, soprano Dr. Jourdan Laine Howell and pianist Dr. Tracey Cowden will perform the World Premiere of Rowing in Eden: Three Dickinson Songs, by composer Douglas Hedwig.
Rowing in Eden was completed in March 2019 during the composer’s awarded residency at Willapa Bay AiR, WA. The selected poems, as well as elements of the musical settings, reflect the influence and congruence of the American Transcendentalism Movement in the mid-19th century. The titles of the three songs are: The World is Not Conclusion, I taste a liquor never brewed, Wild Nights!
Douglas Hedwig’s chamber and large-ensemble compositions have been performed throughout the U.S., Italy, England, Scotland and Indonesia. He is the recipient of awards and honors from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy Awards), Siena Art Institute (Italy), Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, Willapa Bay AiR, and was the 3rd prize winner of the 2018 American Prize in chamber music composition. Dr. Hedwig is Professor Emeritus at Brooklyn College (City University of New York), and former faculty at The Juilliard School. For 27 years he was a trumpeter with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (NYC).
