The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the selection of five finalists for the Overture Composition Competition held in partnership with New Music USA and Music Alive to promote the creation and performance of new music. Music Director Stephen Alltop and Music Alive Composer-in-Residence Stacy Garrop adjudicated the competition, which was open to residents of any age within a 200-mile radius of Champaign-Urbana. The finalists are:
Maya Benyas, age 12, Carbondale, IL: “Fantasy House Overture”
Mark Rheaume, age 27, Springfield, IL: “Entrance Fanfare”
Kyle Shaw, age 30, Savoy, IL: “Gilgamesh Overture”
Roger Zare, age 32, Woodridge, IL: “Strontium Red”
Zhaoyu Zhang, age 29, Champaign, IL: “Rising Sun”
The five composers will have their three-minute works rehearsed and performed by the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra at our Music Alive Reading Session on Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn Champaign. The Reading Session is open to the public, free of charge, to give audiences a chance to see the dynamic process used to bring new orchestral music to life. Maestro Stephen Alltop will conduct the orchestra through each of the five finalists’ pieces, and Dr. Garrop will introduce each composer to the audience. There will be a question-and-answer session with the five composers at the conclusion of the event.
The audience and orchestra will be invited to vote for their favorite overture. Maestro Alltop and Dr. Garrop will select two winners, who will each receive a $500 prize. The two winning overtures will be performed by the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra at their season finale concert in April, 2019.
