Event Information

Join the Sotto Voce Vocal Collective (https://sottovocevocalcollective.wordpress.com) for a fascinating afternoon of new vocal works, featuring two new commissions by Rust-Belt composers, as well as the singing and composing of Oberlin alumni.

Sotto Voce Vocal Collective is a Buffalo-based contemporary vocal ensemble that aims to promote awareness of both the capabilities of the human voice and the diversity of composers living today. The group features Oberlin alumni Jessie Downs (Artistic Director, soprano) and Suzanne Fatta (tenor). Their repertoire also includes a compellingly modern arrangement of an ancient chant by Oberlin alumn Mary Larew.

This Oberlin concert is the first stop on Sotto Voce’s first tour! Their program, “Living Voices” takes listeners on an introspective journey through haunting sound-stories and sound-scapes. Each piece explores the inner workings of the human psyche through a different mystery of vocal phenomena – the voice’s origin in breath, the effects of spatialization and electronics, the beating of closely-tuned tones, the dramatic impact of the voice as human presence, degrees of ensemble unification and separation, activation of different bodily resonances, and the meeting of virtuosic techniques new and old.

The original program – as presented in our home city of Buffalo – will be augmented for the tour to include the arrangement by Mary Larew and a original work by Sotto Voce bass Brien Henderson – both of which draw upon ancient musics and connect the program’s contemporary contemplations to the history of song.

Join us for a dramatic experience you’re not soon to forget!
