Afro Latin Jazz Alliance

New York, NY

The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) is a nonprofit organization founded by musician, composer and educator Arturo O’Farrill in 2007.  ALJA is dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of Afro Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, enriching the genre through commissions for composers and arrangers and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this cultural treasure. ALJA’s resident orchestra, the GRAMMY award winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO), led by Arturo O’Farrill, have firmly established ALJO as the standard-bearer for creative interpretation of Latin jazz greats as well as the driving force behind new commissions from Latin music’s most talented composers and arrangers such as Miguel Zenon, Dafnis Prieto, Gabriel Alegria, Papo Vazquez, Edmar Castenada, Michael Philip Mossman, Arturo O’Farrill and others.

Arturo O’Farrill is an innovative composer and his work is an important part of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra’s annual New York season. A celebrated composer with a frequent new ground-breaking and forward-looking perspective, Mr. O’Farrill has received commissions from the Apollo Theater; Meet the Composer, the Big Apple Circus, the Philadelphia Music Project, Symphony Space, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
