Alex PehNew Paltz, NY
Pianist Alex Peh is a collaborative teaching artist, assistant professor of music and coordinator of the piano program at SUNY New Paltz in the bucolic Hudson Valley. He engages with a wide range of music, using his classical training to support his work in traditional and contemporary music, experimental works, and improvisation. He commissions composers to write new pieces, explores world music idioms, and experimental processes. From working with LEGO Mindstorm robotic musical instruments to Burmese piano style, Alex has performed in venues such as the DiMenna Center NYC; Carnegie Weill Recital Hall NYC; Kennedy Center, DC; Austrian Embassy, DC, Abrons Art Center, NYC; and Benaroya Hall, Seattle. Recent concerts include performances at BRIC house, NYC; Byzantine Museum in Thessaloniki, Greece; Stone Residency at the Glass Box Theater, NYC; and Dartmouth College’s Hopkins Center.
Alex has given educational workshops in K-12 public and private schools throughout the country, connecting with students on topics that range from the music of Beethoven to experimental music of Lucier and Cage. He has performed with the Filarmonica Pitesti, Washington Sinfonietta and Indiana University Chamber Orchestra, and his performances have been aired on Chicago classical radio WFMT 98.7 and Washington D.C Classical radio, WETA 90.9.
Alex shares a special partnership with composer Phyllis Chen, performing the world premiere of her work Columba, commissioned by the Harvard FROMM foundation, at SUNY New Paltz and the Banff Centre. With his college music students, Alex premiered Opus Fun for robotic musical instruments built by fifth grade students from the Ethical Culture School at the 2017 Uncaged Toy Piano Festival held at Abrons Art Center, NYC.
Alex has attended the Banff, Aspen and Tanglewood music festivals where he worked with Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Paul Lewis, Emanuel Ax, Peter Serkin and Pamela Frank. He performed Stravinsky’s Les Noces for four pianos, percussion and choir with Charles Dutoit conducting the Tanglewood Festival Choir. He has studied with major artists such as Arnaldo Cohen, Menahem Pressler, Sylvia Wang, Evelyne Brancart, and Jeremy Denk. Born in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, Alex is interested in the music of Southeast Asia, studying Sandaya Burmese piano with Kit Young Kyaw Kyaw Naing
Alex is an assistant professor of piano at the State University of New York in New Paltz, and is on faculty at the Anatolia Summer Performance Program in Thessaloniki Greece.
