Breaking The Mold!
Building Connections – MUSIC & DANCE, Tradition with Innovation, Auditory with the Visual, and the Serious with the Playful!
ANNA MARIA MENDIETA, harpist, enjoys a busy career as a soloist, orchestral musician, recording artist, and teacher. She is recognized internationally as a pioneer in performing Argentine Tango music on the harp with praises published by The American Symphony Orchestra League as an “exceptional and charismatic soloist”. Her creation of “Tango del Cielo” (Tango of Heaven) is a successful national touring company with a multimedia concert-show of Music & Dance (Tango & Flamenco) and a tribute to the Silent Films, since it was through the Silent Films that tango was brought to the United States. She has many ensembles of various styles of classical music. Her “Del Cielo” Ensemble performs outreach programs for the community in a playful and engaging manner connecting with all ages. Anna Maria was the first harpist to explore tango as a new genre for the harp. She has developed a new method of playing the harp in order to produce the fast chromatic and distinctive percussive effects so prominent in Tango music. She has caught the attention of the world’s top Tango composers who have composed and arranged music for her. Ms Mendieta is in demand as a soloist with orchestras to perform this unique concerti. When she’s not pulling strings, Anna Maria is out on the dance floor as a part of the show!
Establishing New Connections & New Horizons:
Anna Maria’s new project is a CD/DVD album of special Harp-Tango music for Harp & Orchestra; the first of it’s kind in the world, featuring the music of Astor Piazzolla as well as newly composed music and special arrangements created for her by an All-Star list of composers and personal friends of Piazzolla including multi Grammy Award winner and Oscar nominee Jorge Calandrelli, Grammy-award winners Pablo Ziegler & Daniel Binelli (Piazzolla’s musicians), and multi Grammy nominee Jeremy Cohen of Quartet San Francisco, winner of the 2004 International Tango Competition. Besides selections for Solo Harp & Orchestra, the album will also include several solo & ensemble selections from her touring show “Tango Del Cielo” with Argentine Tango, Flamenco, Spanish Classical, and Latin Jazz. The combination CD/DVD recording project will feature music videos with performances and tango dancers filmed on location in Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as a brief documentary of the entire project. Music & Video Production began in Winter of 2015 with talented engineers & producers from both the USA & Argentina. The projected release date will be in the Winter of 2017 for worldwide distribution.
All new compositions and orchestra arrangements have been created by the composers. Harp arrangements are by Anna Maria Mendieta. All ten orchestral tracks have been recorded at Skywalker Ranch in California with Leslie Ann Jones as recording engineer. Several harp & ensemble tracks were recorded at the Music Annex with Russell Bond, engineer. Many solo harp tracks will continue to be recorded at Skywalker until completion. Music Video production began in 2016 in Argentina and is being produced by Libres Del Mundo. Video & Documentary Production has already begun with Milomix Post Production. Compilation of live concert material has been collected featuring the performers of the Tango Del Cielo touring group, musicians are principal players with orchestras joined by award winning dancers.
