Aperture DuoLos Angeles, CA
Aperture Duo curates fearless programs that explore new sounds, voices, and techniques through the lens of violin and viola chamber music. Lauded for their “precision and interpretation” along with their “distinct sense of unity and independence” (icareifyoulisten.com), Los Angeles-based Aperture Duo was founded in 2015 by violinist Adrianne Pope and violist Linnea Powell. Equally at home performing old and new music, Aperture Duo actively commissions diverse new works to expand the violin and viola duo repertoire.
Performance credits include the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Noon to Midnight, Tuesdays @ Monk Space, WasteLAnd, the main stage at the Carlsbad Music Festival, Music at Boston Court, The Last Bookstore, San Diego’s Bread and Salt Gallery, UCLA’s Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival, Brooklyn’s Home Audio Concert Series, UC Santa Barbara Summer Music Festival, Craft in America Center’s Window Concert Series, the Wild Beast at California Institute of the Arts, and the Hear Now Music Festival.
Committed to working with emerging composers, Aperture Duo has been in residence at California Institute of the Arts, California State University Long Beach, Las Positas College, Black House SoCal New Music Workshop, Eureka! Musical Minds of California Graduate Student Conference, and the Young Musicians Foundation’s Composer Program. They have designed educational concerts for hundreds of LA Unified School District students with Wild Up and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and have worked closely with Harmony Project string students with the Hear Now Music Festival. Aperture Duo has been in residence at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire and in 2020 will be in residence at the Women’s International Study Center in Santa Fe, NM.
As recent transplants to Los Angeles in 2014, Adrianne and Linnea met on the concert stage. They were both looking for creative chamber music opportunities to balance their busy freelance careers and quickly learned that they not only shared the University of Michigan as their alma mater, but also a passion for performing and interpreting new, experimental, and rarely heard chamber music. They gave their first concert in 2015 and Aperture Duo was formed.
This season, Aperture Duo launches (a place is a place), a bi-coastal collaborative commissioning project with NY based violin/viola duo andPlay. Additional collaborations include “Aperplicity”, an evening of performance art with LA based duo Autoduplicity. Aperture Duo is currently in the studio recording their debut album of experimental folk-punk commissions on Populist Records in 2020.
Aperture Duo is a project of the Fulcrum Arts’ Emerge Fiscal Sponsorship Program.
