Arooj AftabBrooklyn, NY
Arooj Aftab is a neo-sufi and minimalist composer/singer who gracefully experiments and bends the lines between ancient mystic poetry, south asian classical, jazz, american soul and electronic dream-scape musics.
In 2018, Aftab was named among NPR’s 200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women, and The New York Time’s 25 Best Classical Songs of 2018. Aftab has opened for Mitski at the Brooklyn Steel, has performed at MoMa’s Summer Series, and will be performing at the Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturday this May 2019.
Released on New Amsterdam Records, Siren Islands is a raw collection of ambient, experimental electronic music, carrying strong themes of female empowerment, and taking inspiration from the mythology of Sirenum Scopuli.
from distant waters, from parallel worlds,
concealed by the drifting mists of floating islands
come the siren songs
beckoning the spirit to submerge and submit
Bird Under Water
Dark post-pop meets mystic muse, Arooj Aftab’s Bird Under Water undulates and scintillates. A masterful expression of lyrical and acoustic soul, tripped out through analog voltage and experimental digital filters.
