Blake OpperNew York , NY
I am currently a senior saxophone student at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC. I’m also an alumnus of Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. I’ve studied with great musicians such as Jason Moran, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, and Jane Ira Bloom. I’ve also studied music composition with Dave Douglas, Darcy James Argue, and Kirk Nurock.
My main ambition as an artist is to create a new space within the artistic community that allows for more audience participation and a wider range of weird and fun music. I have collaborated with visual artists, dancers, comedians, poets, actors, etc; and have found these collaborations to be some of the most joyful experience I’ve ever had. I’m very interested in doing more cross disciplinary work and using these collaborative experiences to find new elements to incorporate into my musical practice. Most recently I’ve been focused on adding elements of humor to my otherwise very serious music.
My primary project at the moment is a group called Blake Opper’s Questionable Solution. It is an octet comprised of 1 voice, 4 horns, 2 pianos, and drumset. The group has existed for about a year now and I’m very excited about the future of this ensemble.
