Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music

Santa Cruz, CA

Hailed as a “…new music mecca…” by the New York Times, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music is America’s foremost festival for contemporary symphonic music. Its mission is to provide living composers the means they need to create the future of the art form, give audiences access to the creative process, and provide mentorship and support for the next generation of conductors and composers.  Named “one of the top five incubators of new music in the world” by New York’s WQXR radio, the Festival is led by 38-year-old Romanian-born Cristian Macelaru, Music Director and Conductor since 2017. Founded in 1963 by composer Lou Harrison and collaborators, Cabrillo Festival is winner of the League of American Orchestras and ASCAP’s John S. Edwards Award for Strongest Commitment to new American music.
