Zhangyi ChenBaltimore, MD
The music of Chen Zhangyi has been described by The Straits Times as “a breath of fresh air on our musical landscape” and “music from a choral voice of the future” by BBC radio 3. He has collaborated with ensembles such as London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Bretagne, Tokyo Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra,Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Lyric Opera and re: mix.
Zhangyi has most recently completed a viola concerto commission for violist Lim Chun with the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 110th anniversary. He is currently working on a concerto for violinist Siow Lee Chin and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. His dramatic works Window Shopping, Laksa Cantata, and Pursuant passionately reveal his work that explore vernacular themes. Future collaborations include new works for T’ang Quartet, Singapore Symphony, and Singapore Wind Symphony.
He read music at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory (NUS) and Peabody Institute (Johns Hopkins University). His composition mentors include Kevin Puts, Peter Edwards, Thomas Benjamin, and Michael Hersch. In 2014, Zhangyi was awarded both the Paul Abisheganaden Grant for Artistic Excellence (NUS), and the Young Artist Award by The National Arts Council.
Zhangyi teaches music at the Baltimore City Community College, and Peabody Institute. He also conducts premieres of new works, and performs on baroque violin (and viola) with the Charm City Baroque and Baltimore Baroque Band.

This work was written for the Composer/Conductor Workshop of the 2012 Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, Santa Cruz.
The workshop was led by conductors Marin Alsop and Gustav Meier.
Three young conductors premiered the work back to back. They were Juga Cohler, Ankush Bahl and Matthew Brown.
