Connection Works

Connection Works (formed in 2007 by jazz musicians) engages the Brooklyn community with performances, presentations, development, and education of jazz and other creative music. It has since earned a reputation as a premiere organization that values its performers and their work. Connection Works’ programs promote and facilitate new work by established and up-and-coming artists alike providing alternatives to the jazz nightclub experience in forums that nourish the astonishing number of brilliant artists in our borough.

Connection Works has presented over 250 concerts, master classes and workshops, propelling the organization to the forefront of the Brooklyn jazz scene. Since 2007, its premiere concert series Wide Open Works (formerly called Brooklyn Jazz Wide Open), has presented over 70 concerts and musical dialogues meriting large-scale international attention, maintaining the highest standards in performance and education, presented in a community-based format. The series’ past lineups have included luminaries such as Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, Tyshawn Sorey, Dave Liebman, Sheila Jordan, John Abercrombie and Billy Hart. Connection Works has also commissioned and premiered new works for large ensemble, octet and expanded string quartet among other ensembles.

WORKS featuring Michel Gentile (flute), Daniel Kelly (piano) and Rob Garcia (drums), is the resident ensemble of Connection Works. Bandleaders in their own right, these artists embrace the group’s unique instrumentation to forge a distinct and powerful voice. WORKS has garnered increasing attention from the media and the public alike, consistently receiving critic’s picks from The New York Times and Time Out New York. Downbeat Magazine gave their eponymous release four stars and listed it in Best New Releases of 2013. Initiating many adventurous project, they have composed for and performed with a chamber orchestra, composed for string quartet, commissioned big band pieces featuring the trio (Joel Harrison Large Ensemble & Andrew Rathbun Large Ensemble), and collaborated with a long list of esteemed guests including such jazz heavyweights as Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Joseph Jarman, Scott Colley, Michael Formanek, David Binney and many others.

WIDE OPEN septet started in 2017 as an expanded resident ensemble. The group performs commissioned works by its members. This unique instrumentation offers the composer a wide palette to explore many directions. The members are: Dana Lyn – violin, Michel Gentile – flute, Anna Webber- saxophone, Jacob Garchik – trombone, Daniel Kelly – piano, Matt Pavolka – bass, Rob Garcia – drums.

Excerpts from Mivos Quartet plays ChamberWORKS concert

On May 11, 2013 the Mivos String Quartet premiered four new extended compositions by Michel Gentile, Daniel Kelly and Rob Garcia. The Mivos Quartet is a world-renowned specialist of new music. These four works combined avant-garde techniques with improvisation to suggest new directions in music. This is a continuation of ChamberWORKS, a series started in 2011 featuring classical formations performing new music with improvisation integrated into their framework.
