Beginning in New York City, followed by over ten years in Europe before a return to Soho five years ago, Stefanie Batten Bland’s career has taken a geographically circuitous path to her present prestigious status as a 2016 Jerome Robbins Award honoree.
Batten Bland creates dances committed to current events by encouraging a sense of communal participation emotionally, spiritually and philosophically as well as at times, through actual audience physical engagement. Unguarded by abstraction and undeterred by convention, the emotional content of Stefanie Batten Bland’s work is directly accessible; its powerful emotional, social and philosophical message is visceral. Her work, dance installations, combine movement, original visual art and music, are site-specific and designed to embrace the space and community within.
In addition to dances commissioned by the Second Avenue Dance Company (New York City), Modlin Center for the Arts (Richmond, VA), Zenon Dance Company (Minneapolis, MN), Transitions Dance Company (London), Alvin Ailey ll Company (New York City) and Frontier Danceland (Singapore), Batten Bland’s work for her own troupe, Company SBB , has been seen in Europe, throughout the United States and Asia.
Recent artistic residencies include NYU Tisch School of The Arts, Oakland University, Wayne State University, Spelman College, Santa Fe College, University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Ohio University, Middle Tennessee State University, Guest Faculty at Ithaca College.
While the majority of her creative efforts are committed to creating site-specific installations that unite dance with music and the visual arts, Batten Bland has created nine films that have been seen in international festivals in Europe, South America, the United States and South Africa. She has also choreographed for Guerlain Perfumes, Van Cleef & Arpels, Louis Vuitton, SYTYCD-Poland and the French Presidential Gala of Cannes in 2012. Continuing her stage career, she has been performing in Punch Drunk’s hit show in New York City “Sleep No More” since 2014.
Patient(ce) – a physical requiem
“Patient(ce)” is an evening-length, interdisciplinary work inspired by the structure of jazz with its formal emphasis on the eternal present.
Awarded by New Music USA in 2015, this musical collaboration is with futuristic jazz ensemble Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber and visual installation by Ms. Batten Bland and Alaric Hahn. This creation is a special piece as it is an ode, a physical requiem to Ed Bland the controversial contemporary jazz composer and filmmaker.
