de novo dance

Queens, NY

de novo dance is a performance-based collective that incorporates dance, theater, music, and technology to create transformative, immersive environments. Our work focuses on exploring the mystery in the quotidian, creating genre-defiant performances, blurring the boundaries between performer and spectator, and sharing these experiences with diverse populations. We invite participants from a variety of backgrounds as well as our audiences to co-create with us. de novo dance exists to generate shifts in perception and to create time and place for meaningful exchange.

de novo dance was founded in 2012 by performance artist Ian Wen, choreographer/dancer Irina Kom, composer/dancer Aurie Hsu, and composer/technologist Steven Kemper. In 2013, de novo’s inaugural show Houseguest, a multimedia performance incorporating butoh and belly dance, original music, and seniors from a Queens-based center, played to sold out audiences at the Martha Graham Dance Center. With QCA, DFTA, and DCA support, Houseguest combined diverse performance modalities, electroacoustic music, and audience interaction to explore themes of hibernation, transformation and awakening.
