Duo ApollonLos Angeles, CA
Anastasia Malliaras and Aaron Haas of Duo Apollon perform original repertoire for voice and guitar, as well as transcriptions from piano. The repertoire originally written for guitar and voice is more obscure and showcases song cycles that are rarely heard, while the transcriptions reinterpret classic art song with the unique sound of the guitar-voice duo. Recently, the pair has teamed up with composer Jordan Nelson in order to commission a set of art songs based on American folk songs.
Là-bas, vers l’église
This is the second piece from Maurice Ravel’s set “5 mélodies populaires grecques”. The cycle captures glimpses of Greek peasant life with this particular song depicting a funeral. The music has been transcribed from piano to guitar by Aaron Haas.
Sailor Boy comes from the Folksong Arrangements by Benjamin Britten.
Asturiana is the third song from Manual De Falla’s “Siete canciones populares españolas”.
To see if it might console me
I drew near a green pine.
To see me weep, it wept.
And the pine, since it was green,
wept to see me weeping!
