Fabian Svensson

Simrishamn, SE

Fabian Svensson is a composer based in southern Sweden.

Unusual instrumentations are a recurring feature of Fabian’s music: his work list includes a ukulele duo, a piece for saxophone quartet plus 4 electric guitars, and a piece for 8 melodicas, hi-hat and bass. In his hour-long work Tillvaratagna effekter, he reinvents the violin concerto, with 2 sopranino recorders, 2 melodicas, 6 electric guitars, 2 bass guitars, and timpani backing up the soloist.

Fabian’s music has been performed at venues ranging from obscure garages to the Sydney Opera House, and has been featured at festivals such as MATA, SONiC, Nordic Music Days, Dutch Music Days, and ISCM World New Music Days. His works have been performed by ensembles such as eighth blackbird, the Calder Quartet, Ensemble Klang, Ensemble Offspring, Sentieri Selvaggi, the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet and many others.

Fabian is the winner of the 2008 Carlsbad Music Festival Composers Competition and the 2009 UnCaged Toy Piano Competition, and he has been shortlisted for the Netherland’s prestigious Gaudeamus prize no less than four times. In 2012, Fabian was a resident at the I-Park artists’ colony in rural Connecticut.

Born in 1980, Fabian has studied composition in Piteå, Stockholm and The Hague. Besides composing, Fabian is also a keen advocate of the melodica, often playing melodica parts in his own works.
