My Awarded Projects
Mat Diafos Sweeney is a director, composer, and producer. He creates immersive and interdisciplinary new performance as Four Larks. These ‘junkyard operas’ are devised from found objects and adapted texts, and staged in unexpected locations. Recently, Mat debuted a new body of songs, ὕμνος, in residence at the Getty Villa. It will premiere in full staging in 2018. Mat recently received an Ovation Award for The Temptation of St Antony (LA TIMES’ Critics Pick, LA WEEKLY Critics’ Pick, Ovation Recommended, Stage Raw Recommended). His previous project, Orpheus (Best LA Theatre of 2014- KCRW & Bitter Lemons) was presented in a former Fabric Factory downtown.
Mat lived in Melbourne, Australia from 2008-2012 where his work as a director and composer was supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, the Besen Foundation, the City of Melbourne (Young Artist Grant), and the Malthouse Theatre. He has received the Green Room Award (Melbourne’s premiere arts award) for his Sound Design and Composition in 2011, 2012, & 2013.
In addition to his performance work, Mat curates and operates Basic Flowers, an under-the-radar venue in downtown Los Angeles which hosts a variety of new music and performance experiments.
