Violist Hannah Levinson is committed to music of the past 50 years, performing regularly with the new music groups andPlay, Mimesis Ensemble, Ensemble Mise-en, Ghost Ensemble, and Ensemble Moto Perpetuo. Her passion for collaborating with living composers has led her to commission many works for either solo viola or violin/viola duo, and also to work with composers such as Christian Wolff, Jason Eckardt, and Mohammed Fairouz. As an orchestral musician, she has played under the baton of Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös, Jeffrey Milarsky, David Robertson, and Robert Spano.
Based in New York City, Hannah has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Symphony Space, Merce Cunningham Studios, the DiMenna Center, and The Stone. Hannah is also an active teacher, and is on faculty at Western Connecticut State University. She completed her MM in Contemporary Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, and graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory with degrees in both Russian and East European Studies and Viola Performance. Her primary teachers include Nadia Sirota, Martha Strongin Katz, and Karen Ritscher. Hannah is currently pursuing a PhD in Performance at New York University.
