Nashville, TN

Intersection is a flexible contemporary music ensemble dedicated to challenging the traditional concert experience, exploring music of the 20th and 21st centuries, supporting living composers, presenting programs for younger audiences, embracing collaboration, technology and the avant-garde, while expanding, respecting and embracing the musical and cultural diversity of Nashville.

Founded by conductor Kelly Corcoran in 2014, Intersection creates new and unexpected ways for audiences to experience contemporary music through non-traditional venues and staging, unusual instrument combinations, and performances that integrate lighting, video, and live dance.

Intersection uses contemporary music in an intentional way to bring forward new and unique voices, build community, and engage in dialogue, with programs centered around social issues such as race and social justice, and around different musical cultures. This focus is born out of a desire for Nashville’s music scene to more accurately reflect the diversity of music being created around the world today.

With the belief that contemporary classical music literacy can develop creativity, cultivate listening, and foster a shared understanding of our world, Intersection devotes half of its programming to youth and family programs, and has developed Contempo Kids, a curriculum that help students learn about composition, create music, and develop their own unique musical voice.

Jonathan Bailey Holland commission

Intersection’s debut performance, Transfiguration, brought together an ensemble of 19 professional musicians in collaboration with contemporary dance company New Dialect and a video art installation curated by Zeitgeist Gallery. The program featured vastly influential 20th and 21st century composers whose music is seldom heard in Nashville.
