As a critic, writer and editor, James Chute has covered arts and culture for four decades. A Pittsburgh native and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (Doctor of Musical Arts), he served as music critic for The Cincinnati Post, The Milwaukee Journal and The Orange County Register before joining The San Diego Union in 1990. In San Diego he held positions as Features Editor, Arts Editor, Special Sections Editor and Music and Art Critic. A Pulitzer Prize finalist in criticism (for his coverage of the Milwaukee and Chicago symphonies while at the Milwaukee Journal) and a winner of an ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award, Penney Missouri Award, Best of the West award, and a California Newspaper Publishers award, he has contributed articles to the New Grove Dictionary of Music, among other publications.
