Joshua DeVriesChesterton, IN
A multi-faceted performer, cellist Joshua DeVries has been a featured soloist in concerts worldwide, embracing both standard and contemporary music with “fiery virtuosity and thoughtful finesse” (Yixing Daily). With South Shore Orchestra, Joshua commissioned and was the dedicatee of a concerto, Sun-Wukong, from composer Michael Schelle. Premiered in October 2013, he and SSO took the concerto on a sold-out Western New Year’s tour of China, including performances broadcast on national television and a performance at the Yixing Central Gymnasium, a stadium built for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Joshua was selected as a Student Ambassador for the 2013 Chicago Youth in Music Festival. During the festival, he participated in discussions ranging from outreach programs to the definition of “Citizen Musician” and performed with members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and Youth Orchestra of the Americas in educational concerts all over the Chicago area. He is currently Co-Principal cellist of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and Encore Chamber Orchestra, CYSO’s premiere performing ensemble.
As cellist of the Ligeia Quartet, Joshua, along with violinists Ursula Steele and Cyril Wang and violist Alaina Rea, premiered Sprechstisambastimme by Michael Schelle in 2013. The program, also featuring Debussy’s Quartet and Bartók’s 4th Quartet, was sponsored by the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and was an offshoot of the Citizen Musician community engagement initiative of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. "What makes [the Ligeia Quartet] unique is why and how they set out to do something more for the future of classical music…[they make music] not only for its aesthetic value, but also for its ability to inspire others by creating a shared experience." (Jonathan McCormick, CSO’s Institute for Learning). In April, the Quartet will be a featured guest artist at Butler University in Indianapolis, working with string students, chamber groups, and student composers in live masterclass settings. The residency concludes with a concert featuring music by composition professor Michael Schelle and his students, including 5 world premieres. As the cellist of this ensemble, Joshua has participated in masterclasses with the Omer Quartet, Kontras Quartet and Orion Ensemble and will be competing in the 2014 St. Paul String Quartet Competition. He has also studied chamber music with Minghuan Xu, John Walz, and Christoph Wyeneken.
Joshua has served as the principal cellist of honor ensembles all over the United States, and participated in solo masterclasses with cellists from the Chicago, Cleveland, and Indianapolis Symphonies and the Los Angeles Opera. He currently studies with Richard Hirschl of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago College for the Performing Arts.
