In Flanders Fields
My setting of the World War I poem by John McCrae. I’m at the piano and Charles Robert Stephens is the baritone. This has not had a public performance yet. I use the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” as thematic material for the baritone throughout, but not the text. It is even used during melismatic phrases.
And Now You’re Mine…
This is one of the 4 Pablo Neruda Love Sonnets that I set to music. It is sung by Charles Robert Stephens, baritone, with me at the piano. I have also performed it with a mezzo-soprano. The poem describes the realizations and reflections on having a lover who gives one substance. “Without you, I am your dream. And that is all.” All 4 of my Love Sonnets have also been orchestrated.
