John Colpitts

John Colpitts aka Kid Millions is a drummer, composer, songwriter, improviser, teacher, and writer who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.  

Selected Professional Ensembles:

Kid Millions/Sarah Bernstein Duo (2014-present) – violin/vocal and drums improvisational duo with celebrated jazz and improvising violinist. Live album released in 2015 and their studio album “Tense Life” was released in 2017. New studio album will be released in 2019.

Man Forever (2010 through present) – composed, recorded and released four full length albums and four live recordings on various formats. Collaborated with William Basinski, So Percussion, Laurie Anderson, Yo La Tengo and TIGUE. 

* Toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, Japan and China and has performed at venues and festivals such as The Poetry Foundation, San Diego Art Institute, NYU Skirball Center, Ecstatic Music Festival, Incubate, RedCat, Detroit Contemporary Museum, The Kitchen, Canadian Music Centre, Issue Project Room Darmstadt Institute, The Stone, and Pittsburgh Filmmakers.

Oneida (1997 through present) – founder, drummer, composer, vocalist. Recorded and released fourteen full length albums with an additional fourteen shorter works and live performances on various formats. 

Selected Residencies and special performances:

Composer in Residence – Middlebury College – Nov 2012 and 2017.

Martha Graham Dance Company – Feb 2017 – worked on music with Tei Blow with choreographer Annie-B Parson. Music premiered at NYC’s Joyce Theater.

Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant Recipient 2017 – support given towards an 8 show European tour by Man Forever and TIGUE.

Tutto Questo Sentire Residency July 2015 and September 2017 – Tuscany Residency with performances in Capalbio and the Orto Botanico di Roma in Rome, Italy.

Musical collaboration and soundtrack with artists Broomberg & Chanarin for their multi-media piece and short film “Rudiments” – Summer 2015.

Red Bull Music Academy NY 2015 – First Commissioned Piece by the Academy. Premiered “100 Disciplines” at Brooklyn Museum on May 3rd 2015. Recording released in 2017 on Thrill Jockey Records.

New Music USA Grant Awardee – Jan 2015 – Man Forever with TIGUE – Percussion and Vocal Canons – assistance granted for the recording of the album “Play What They Want.”

Composer Portrait – Darmstadt Institute – Issue Project Room – June 2012 (selected as one of the Best Concerts of 2012 by the New York Times by Ben Ratliff)

Ryonen – for tuned snare drums, toms, bongo drums, concert bass drum, two cymbals, 5 voices, 2013 (15 minutes)
