John Raymond

Brooklyn, NY

“Electrifyingly new and strangely familiar at the same time. With his mix of modern sounds and old-fashioned feeling, Raymond is steering jazz in the right direction.” (Downbeat Magazine)

Labeled “a prepossessing young trumpet player…” (New York Times), John Raymond is an American jazz trumpeter, composer and educator living in New York City. Rooted in both traditional and modern forms, John’s music incorporates jazz, classical, folk and indie-rock influences.

John has recently been a featured artist at the FONT Festival (Festival of New Trumpet), the NYC Winter Jazz Festival and the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and was awarded the 2015 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award presented by ASCAP. He has collaborated with musicians such as Billy Hart, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Orrin Evans, Linda Oh, Ethan Iverson, Dan Tepfer and Gilad Hekselman among others.

John has released three albums under his name since 2012. His most recent, “Real Feels,” brings together a unique bass-less trio including guitarist Gilad Hekselman, drummer Colin Stranahan and Raymond on the flugelhorn. The album has received rave reviews, including a ★★★★1/2 review from Downbeat Magazine, and the group toured across the USA on a 24-city album release tour.

John is also an active educator, teaching at the United Nations International School, the New York Jazz Academy and as an active guest artist and clinician at high schools and universities around the country.
