Justus SchlichtingLaguna Beach, CA
Justus Schlichting’s juvenile writing appeared in the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology, Clinical Chemistry, Crawdaddy, Rolling Stone, Playboy, and Newsweek. Abandoning prose for computer code, he worked for the University of California, Cal State LA, the Universities of Nevada and Washington, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA), Hughes Aircraft, and General Dynamics. He co-founded S&S Datalink, Inc. in 1996, creating computer systems for non-profit public hospitals nationwide. He retired in 2014. Mr. Schlichting earned a B.A. from Oberlin College and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University.
A lifelong attendee of classical concerts, Mr. Schlichting studied trombone with Frank Crisafulli, and composition with Olly Wilson. He recently took up the cello, a humbling experience. In 2012, he and his wife Elizabeth began commissioning new art music. Since 2014, over 190 pieces they supported have premiered. Completed projects include Shared Madness (32 works for solo violin), Hopscotch (an opera performed in 24 limousines cruising the streets of LA), Bridge to Beethoven (new works paired with Beethoven’s piano and violin sonatas), Anatomy Theater (an opera presenting the public execution and dissection of a British murderess), The Source (an oratorio about Chelsea Manning), Josephine Baker: A Portrait (Ojai Festival), violin concertos by Vijay Iyer, Daniel Bjarnason, and Pierre Jalbert, In Pursuit of Flying (piano concerto by Hannah Lash for Jeremy Denk and the SPCO), Limitless (seven composer-performer and violin duets), Gemini by Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the Pulitzer Prize winning opera PRISM by Ellen Reid.
They are excited to support emerging composers in collaboration with the Blackbird Creative Lab, the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival, the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy, and the American Composers Orchestra. Schlichting serves on the Steering Committee of New Music Connect, and on the boards of Wild Up and Yarlung Artists.
The Schlichtings thank the following composers, whose work they have supported: Samuel Adams, Julia Adolphe, Andy Akiho, Timo Andres, Matthew Aucoin, Artur Avanesov, Rafailia Bampasidou, Richard Barrett, Jean-Baptiste Barriere, Eve Beglarian, Nick Benavides, Derek Bermel, Lisa Bielawa, Daniel Bjarnason, Martin Bresnick, Bruce Broughton, David Bruce, Dan Caputo, Christopher Cerrone, Anthony Cheung, Danny Clay, Anna Clyne, Donald Crockett, Matiss Cudars, Viet Cuong, Dai Wei, Mario Davidovsky, Jonathan Dawe, Mario Diaz de Leon, Zosha Di Castri, Bryce Dessner, James Dillon, Eugene Drucker, Fjola Evans, Gabriela Lena Frank, David Fulmer, Sarah Gibson, Detlev Glanert, Philip Glass, Geoffrey Gordon, Michael Gordon, Mark Grey, Marc Andre Hamelin, John Harbison, Ted Hearne, Molly Heron, Anders Hillborg, Jeffrey Holmes, Toshio Hosokawa, Armen Hyusnunts, Vijay Iyer, Pierre Jalbert, Sophia Jani, Nathalie Joachim, Jesse Jones, Gabriel Kahane, Artashes Kartalyan, Ashot Kartalyan, Mike Kelley, Phil Kline, Veronika Krausas, David Lang, Hannah Lash, Steve Lehman, Oliver Lewin, Wei-Chieh Lin, Marc Lowenstein, Wang Lu, David Ludwig, Soo Yeon Lyuh, Tigran Mansourian, James Matheson, Missy Mazzoli, Matt McBane, Andrew McIntosh, Qasim Naqvi, Eric Nathan, Marc Neikrug, Andrew Norman, Carter Pann, Arvo Pärt, Gemma Peacocke, Rachel Peters, Michel Petrossian, Brendon Randall-Meyers, Ellen Reid, David Rosenboom, Christopher Rountree, Jake Runestad, Kaija Saariaho, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vahram Sargsyan, Albert Schnelzer, Daniel Sedgwick, Caroline Shaw, Nina Shekhar, Sean Shepherd, Noam Sivan, Liza Sobel, Annika Socolofsky, Tyshawn Sorey, John Steinmetz, Celia Swart, Augusta Read Thomas, Darian Donovan Thomas, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, Phong Tran, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Martin Ulikhanyan, Julia Wolfe, Scott Wollschleger, Charles Wuorinen, Du Yun, Pamela Z, Ashot Zohrabian, Victor Zupanc
