Kate Wallich

Kate Wallich is a Seattle based choreographer, director and educator – named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”. She trained at Interlochen Arts Academy and holds a BFA Magna Cum Laude from Cornish College of the Arts.

Kate has left a significant mark in the Pacific Northwest, having been commissioned and presented by leading institutions including On the Boards, Seattle Theater Group, Velocity Dance Center, Seattle Art Museum, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Whim W’Him, Northwest Dance Project, Frye Art Museum and Henry Art Gallery. Her popular all-abilities, community focused class Dance Church (@dance_church) that was founded in 2010 brings in 250+ people per week, and has partnered with local and national non-profit organizations and institutions including Gibney, Mark Morris Dance Center, BodyVox, Velocity, On the Boards, The Sweat Spot, Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective, Raincity Rock Camp for Girls, Mary’s Place, Jubilee Women’s Center, Waterfront Seattle and Team Survivor NW among many others. Dance Church is taught by professional dance artists, happens regularly in New York, Seattle, Portland, Indianapolis and Los Angeles, has popped up in cities worldwide and provides subsidized classes for working dance professionals.

Kate co-founded The YC, a research based company comprised of world-class dance artists who collaborate on new works, with Lavinia Vago in 2010 and together they have created four evening-length commissioned works and three large scale site-specific works. Nationally, Kate’s work has been presented at The Joyce with SF-based RawDance, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival Inside/Out and Newfields/Indianapolis Museum of Art. She has been a Visiting Artist at National Center for Choreography at University of Akron with LA-based BODYTRAFFIC, University of Washington, University of Oregon, Cornish College of the Arts, University of Utah and Beloit College. Internationally, her work has been presented at Springboard Danse Montreal and SPOTLIGHT: USA Festival through American Dance Abroad in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

In 2016 she founded Studio Kate Wallich (@studiokatewallich), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating a community of artists and the public through dance based, design forward experiences. The Studio supports the work of The YC, Dance Church, and YC2 — a platform for young dance professionals entering the working field to receive consistent paid training, mentorship and performance opportunities. Kate was a 2013 and 2015 Rauschenberg Residency fellow, a Mana Contemporary/Armitage! Gone residency recipient, a 2018 UCross Foundation Residency Program fellow and has received awards and grants from 4Culture, Artist Trust, The Glenn H. Kawasaki Foundation, MANA Contemporary, and Seattle Magazine.
