Kristina LiebersonNew York , NY
Composer, Singer and Multi-Instrumentalist Kristina Lieberson has been active in the independent music scene since 2009. She was a member of the critically acclaimed band Here We Go Magic, led by singer-songwriter Luke Temple. Kristina played keyboards and sang background vocals for two records and one EP released by the band. Pigeons (2010) and The January EP (2011) were self-produced by bassist Jen Turner. The esteemed Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck) produced A Different Ship (2012). Here We Go Magic toured constantly, playing with indie-rock icons such as Grizzly Bear, The Walkmen, Broken Social Scene and The New Pornographers. They performed in multiple festivals including Glastonbury, Pitchfork, Bonnaroo and Coachella. The band’s experimental sound and focus on poly-rhythms helped shape the writing style of Kristina’s solo work.
After leaving Here We Go Magic, Kristina has been composing for her own project, TEEN. Inspired by the powerful singers she listened to as a child and the sound of a choral experience, Kristina centered her compositions around vocals; with background singing acting as another instrument. She recruited her two sisters, Lizzie (keyboards) and Katherine (drums) to be full time members of the project. To date, TEEN has released two records and one EP, with Kristina composing the majority of the material. Produced by Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, In Limbo (2012) met much positive attention. The lead single “Better” was named #38 on Rolling Stone’s top fifty songs of 2012, and were named “A Band To Watch” by Stereogum. The album was followed by the live, rock sound of Carolina (2013). With the addition of bassist Boshra AlSaadi (whose other projects include singing with the notable Sierra Leonian musician Janka Nabay) the band released The Way And Color (2014). The record received critical acclaim and was described as distinctly modern, R&B-informed pop. Carolina and The Way And Color were produced by the accomplished Daniel Schlett (Ghostface Killah, DIIV, Amen Dunes) of Stange Weather Studio.
TEEN have been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, Pitchfork, Q and many other publications. The group has toured extensively, sharing the stage with Santigold, Eleanor Friedberger, Phantogram and Interpol. They have played events such as MOMA Summer Nights (NYC), Halifax Pop Explosion (Canada) and Latitude Festival (UK). The band is currently writing material for their newest record.
Kristina was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to musical parents. She began studying classical piano at the age of six. She is well versed in many instruments, including the guitar, bass, drums and various electronics. Although her formal training in theory and composition was brief, Kristina has had years of experience playing and touring around the world, to which she gives credit for her diverse musical forays and project ambitions. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY.
