Lyle Blackinton

Pipe Organ Builder and Curator of the Spreckels Organ - San Diego, CA

Lyle Blackinton has been the curator of the Spreckels Organ in Balboa Park, San Diego since 1974…   that’s 40 years!

Brad Nelson (invited to compose "How Can I Keep From Singing?" for this event) writes;
"I’ve known Lyle Blackinton for over 30 years.  He served as chairman of the search committee that invited me to return to San Diego in 1984 as Minister of Music at College Avenue Baptist Church.  This was the church in which I grew up."

"With Lyle’s partnership – as a frequent chairman of our music committee, and as a bass in our choir – we planned and led the first all-city Easter Sunrise Service in Balboa Park’s Starlight Bowl before five thousand people.  Later, I led that event again after it moved to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.  I took our choir on tour to Eastern Europe in 1990, immediately after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the disintegration of Communism.  Following that tour, I conducted major Christmas concerts with the choir and full symphony orchestra in packed performances at Copley Symphony Hall from 1991 to 1994."

"Lyle always provided enthusiastic and full support in all our endeavors!"

Lyle Blackinton stands to the right of San Diego Civic Organist Dr. Carol Williams. He is always vigilant and prepared to “come to the rescue” if needed.
