I Made Subandi is a gamelan composer and performer from Gianyar, Bali. He began his musical studies with his father, the famed drummer and gender wayang player I Made Dig. He continued his education at Sekolah Menengah Karawitan Indonesia and STSI (Music Conservatory). He is a famed virtuoso of the rare seven-toned gender. In 1998-1999, he was Artist In Residence with Gamelan Sekar Jaya in Berkeley CA. During his residency, he collaborated with American composer Richard Marriott on a score for LEGONG DANCE OF THE VIRGINS, which has been repeatedly performed and is available on Milestone Video. Other residencies with Sekar Jaya have occurred in 2000-01 and 2012-13. He is well known for his use of experimentation. Musicologist and composer Michael Tenzer describes Subandi as one of a few composers who “have achieved a self-conscious and fundamental break with the tabuh kreasi form of the recent past.” A short list of his compositions include Tabuh kreasi Sardula (1996), Bajramusti (1997), Tabuh kreasi Ciung Kala (1997), Tabuh Kreasi Palu Gangsa (2002), Iringan Fragmentari Samuan Tiga (2004), Wayan Babad (Album, 2010), Tari Rare Kumara (2011), Tabuh Kreasi Badeng (2012). He is the subject of a film by Vincent Moon entitled “I MADE SUBANDI • A BALINESE STORY” Subandi has collaborated with Dutch trio Boi Akih, Australian composer Paul Grabowski, and American ensemble Club Foot Orchestra. He currently teaches at the Indonesian Academy of Performing Arts in Bali.
