Marcos Lucas (b.1964) graduated in Composition and Musical Education at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), where he currently teaches composition. Between 1995-2000 he lived in England where he studied with John Casken, Jonathan Harvey, Thomas Adès, John Woolrich and Judith Weir and attended masterclasses with Hans Werner Henze, Henry Duttilleux and Peter Maxwell Davies. His music has been featured in music festivals such as the ISCM World Music Days (Ljubliana-Slovenia), State of the Nation (Queen Elisabeth Hall – London), Composer’s Voice, (New York), Festival Tres Cantos (Madrid), Spazio 900 (Cremona), Encontro Internacional de Música de Câmera (Évora), Bienal de Música Brasileira Contemporânea and Panorama da Música Brasileira Atual (Brazil). He has been awarded various prizes, including a 2nd Prize at the Franz Lisz t Foundation Composition Competition (2017) Procter Gregg Award (Manchester 1997), 1st Prize at VI Funarte National Composer´s Competition for Symphony Orchestra (2001), Camargo Guarnieri Competition for Orchestra (2008) e Tinta Fresca Composer´s Competition for Orchestra (2011) among others. His catalogue includes all kinds of music: orchestral, chamber, solo, electronic, vocal, chorus, cantatas and three chamber operas. He has been a visiting scholar and composer at the Indiana University (Fulbright Foundation – 2017) Wesleyan Univesity-Illinois (2012), Universidade de Évora (2012) and University of Salford (2010/2012), and at contemporary music festivals such as “Virtuosi Século XXI” (2013) “Fala Compositor” (2009), “Fórum dos Compositores – FoCo” (2011), “ENCUN” (2012), “Projeto Compositores” (2013), Kammerorchestra Berliner Capella (2019). He has also travelled extensively in Brazil to teach composition and contemporary music, being featured in educational projects such as “Pauta Contemporânea” (SESC, 2008/2009). Since 2005 he has been a member of Preludio 21, a group of composers founded in 1998, which promotes their own music through concert series, masterclasses and lectures. In 2016 Marcos Lucas was the composer featured at the 23rd Piano Competition of Ituiutaba State Conservatory of Music, in Minas Gerais.
