Marjani Forte

Harlem/Manhattan, NY         

Forte is a Los Angeles, CA native and Harlem resident. She traveled as a performer with Urban Bush Women Dance Co. for 5 yrs, and is now co-founder with Nia Love, of LOVE|FORTE A COLLECTIVE. [www.loveforte.org]. Forte has taught master classes and workshops across the U.S. and beyond including the American Dance Festival and ADF China. She is also a member of Urban Bush Womens BOLD Teaching Network, offering UBWs unique approach to dance training and community engagement. As a choreographer, Forte has presented for Danspace Project, Kelly Strayhorn Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA, New Orleans Mckenna Museum, Harlem Stage as an E-Moves 13 Emerging Artist, and New York Live Arts as a Fresh Tracks Resident Artist 2010/11.  She is a 2012 recipient of the Foundation of Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, and a 2013 recipient of a Puffin Foundation Grant for her work "being Here…".


Forte recently completed her Movement Research Artist Residency 2011-13. She is a current BAX Artist in Residence with LOVE|FORTE and a previous 651 Artist Development Initiative Artist.  Marjani currently serves as Adjunct Lecturer, teaching Modern Contemporary Technique at Hunter College-CUNY. With deep gratitude, Forte moves onward in her work honoring that it stems from being born in and having engaged with culturally rich, vibrant, historic, and politically charged communities.
