My Awarded Projects
Mazz SwiftBrooklyn, NY
Violin / Vox / Freestyle Composition artist Mazz Swift, often performing under the name MazzMuse, combines elements of classical, folk, jazz and otherwise free improvisational music and electronica to create a complete musical experience. She is a singer and Juilliard-trained violinist, bringing her passion for creating true compositions in the spur of the moment to audiences around the world. She plays a turn of the 20th century German violin and a 6-string electric violin made by Mark Wood.
Mazz’s diverse musical interests have led her in many directions; from classical to rock to traditional folk music from all over the world to pop, hip hop and jazz. Consequently, she has recorded and performed with a wide variety of artists including Whitney Houston, Perry Farrell, Valerie June, Dee Snider, James "Blood" Ulmer, the great Irish balladeer Paddy Reilly, Vernon Reid, DJ Logic, William Parker, Jason Lindner, Butch Morris, and Kanye West.
In the spring of 2013, Ms. Swift and the band Matuto toured Africa as cultural ambassadors for the US Department of State. In five weeks, they visited Mozambique, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon and Senegal, performing for diplomats, schools, orphans and refugees, teaching workshops and engaging in cultural exchange with local musicians in cities as well as in the Bush.
In 2010, Mazz served as Musical Director and Co-Curator of the show Fire + Fire = Gypsy Meets Black, a spectacular produced by Budapest Hungary’s Palace of the Arts that featured a 15 piece ensemble and explored, through music, the cultural similarities and differences between the Black American and Hungarian Gypsy experiences.
COMPOSITION AND ENSEMBLE WORK
Aside from her solo project, Mazz is involved in several music projects. They include:
VIOLIN WORKS & CHAMBER MUSIC – In addition to her performance career, Mazz is a composer, primarily focusing on pieces for solo acoustic violin, solo electric violin with electronics, and music for small, atypical chamber ensembles. Her piece for violin, viola & double bass, dedicated to Trayvon Martin and his family (entitled “Invisible”) as well as a piece for violin, clarinet & viola (entitled “A True Stranger…”) were included in the Jersey City-based chamber music organization Con Vivo’s 2013 recording and she has also had her chamber pieces performed at festivals, including the New Harmony Music Festival and the Moab Music Festival, some performances of which were live-broadcast on NPR.
HEAR in NOW– an “avant-classical, jazz-tinged” international string trio comprised of cellist Tomeka Reid (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in Chicago, Nicole Mitchell) and Double Bassist Silvia Bolognesi (Butch Morris, winner of the 2010"Musica Jazz Award" for best new talent). In addition to the compositions they share with each other and the world, the ladies of HEAR in NOW also have a strongly unique improvisational rapport. Their first recording was released in February 2012 and they are currently working on their second recording, which will be released in 2014.
VALERIE JUNE – Valerie’s self described Organic Moonshine Roots Music is currently taking the world by storm via a recently released CD “Pushing Against A Stone” (Concord, 2013) and an extensive tour schedule that includes Mazz as violinist for the band. Performance highlights include appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the Austin City Limits Festival and other major venues around the U.S.
Ms. Swift is presently poised to launch a kickstarter campaign to fund the recording and release of two CDs: "Solo MazzMuse" and "MazzMuse – The Band". Please visit www.MazzMuse.com and facebook.com/MazzMuse to find out more about her campaign.
