Miguel Frasconi

Miguel Frasconi is a composer and improvisor specializing in the relationship between acoustic objects and musical form. His instrumentarium includes glass objects, analog electronics, laptop, and hybrid constructions of his own design. Miguel’s unique glass instruments are struck, blown, stroked, smashed and otherwise coaxed into vibration. As a composer his work include chamber music, operas, and numerous dance scores. His latest opera, Hand To Mouth, was premiered in northern California in 2015, while a score he co- composed and performed for a theatrical version of Haruki Murakami’s SLEEP was presented at Japan Society, NYC, in early 2016, to great acclaim.

Miguel’s activities have included collaborations with the Balinese composer Dewa Berata on music for large-scale shadowplays, with tenor John Duykers on unique music/theater events, and with the Tibetan songwriter Techung, with whom he has toured throughout India. Miguel has worked closely with composers John Cage, Jon Hassell, James Tenney, Morton Subotnick, and has collaborated with many choreographers, including Alonzo King and modern dance pioneer Anna Halprin. He is presently working on the music for a theater piece about his dear late friend and collaborator, Remy Charlip, to be presented in San Francisco in the Fall of 2016. His interest in glass and nontraditional musical instruments started in his youth when he was a founding member of The Glass Orchestra, the internationally renowned ensemble featuring all glass instruments (1977-86), and the sound-sculpture band Möbius Operandi (1990-95). As a classically trained keyboardist, he performed with the Paul Dresher Ensemble (1988-95), and with the Philip Glass Ensemble (1992). He is presently a member of Ne(x)works (2006- present), one of the leading new music ensembles in NYC, with whom he performed at MaersMusik/Berliner Festspiele 2012. In September 2012 the New York Times called his CAGE100 Festival @ The Stone “one of the best observances of John Cage’s 100th birthday” and included performances by his Noisy Toy Piano Orchestra and John Cage Variety Show Big Band. Miguel’s music has been released on New Albion, Porter Records, clang.cl, and recordings of his string quartets featuring the JACK Quartet will soon be released on the Tzadik label.

Almost all the sounds in this piece come from one quartz crystal glass bowl with a clean fracture from it’s rim to it’s base. As hard as I tried throughout the recordings for this project, the bowl would not continue to crack. Many wonderful sounds were coaxed from this one object in its unusual state, particularly the vibrations resulting from rubbing and striking near the fissure. But short of taking to it with a metal hammer, the bowl remained magnificently intact.
