Network for New Music
The mission of Network for New Music is to commission and perform a diversity of new musical works of the highest quality by both established and emerging composers; to strengthen the new music community in the Philadelphia region; and to build support for new music by engaging in artistic and institutional collaborations, as well as educational activities. Network is recognized for its excellent performances, innovative programming, in-depth education programs and cross-genre collaborations with other art forms – all created with the purpose of enriching the life of the greater cultural community and supporting the important work of musicians and composers.
Network for New Music, which The Philadelphia Inquirer has called the city’s “premier new music organization” presents passionate, meticulously rehearsed performances of music by emerging and established composers from the United States and abroad. The Network Ensemble is a flexible, 20-member group whose players also perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Since its inception in 1984, the Ensemble has presented more than 650 works and recorded 4 CDs for the Albany and Innova labels. Also committed to education, the Network Ensemble has worked with students from the Curtis Institute of Music, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Swarthmore College, The University of Delaware, and West Chester University; the Ensemble has held an ongoing residency at Haverford College since 2007.
Network for New Music is one of the foremost commissioning organizations in the United States. Now in its 34th year, Network has commissioned 147 works from leading composers including Sebastian Currier, Dai Fujikura, Michael Hersch, Lee Hyla, Steven Mackey, Behzad Ranjbaran, and Chen Yi as well as Pulitzer Prize winners John Harbison, Jennifer Higdon, Bernard Rands, Lewis Spratlan, Melinda Wagner, Richard Wernick, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Recently commissioned works have been reviewed in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Woodcuts by Luke Carlson
Network for New Music reunites with PAFA to present a blockbuster concert of new chamber music commissions by 3 generations of composers: Luke Carlson, Paul Lansky, and Oliver Schneller; also, a Philadelphia premiere by Carolyn Chen. The performance takes place in PAFA’s spectacular Historic Landmark Building, where you’ll be surrounded by the art and architecture that inspired the music. Luke Carlson: Woodcuts, for chamber ensemble, composed in direct response to three powerful woodcuts by Rockwell Kent: Dynamos, Foundry, and Two Locomotives.
