North/South Consonance, IncNew York, NY
North/South Consonance, Inc. has as its mission the promotion, performance and recording of music by contemporary composers from throughout the Americas and the world.
Active since 1980, North/South Consonance earned a reputation for excellence in the performance of music by living composers representing a wide aesthetic spectrum. The organization has sponsored six or more different free admission concert programs each season in New York City. It has also presented high-quality contemporary music concerts and workshops in various locations throughout New York State, New Jersey, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Barcelona (Spain), Rosario (Argentina) and Mexico City.
Over one thousand compositions have received their first performance or New York premiere at a North/South Consonance concert. Not only have our concert programs reflected the richness and diversity found in today’s classical music scene but they have consistently showcased the work of emerging composers.
During the 1980s the North/South Consonance Ensemble collaborated with the Opus One and Classic Masters record labels. Five LP albums and two CD albums featuring music from the Americas were recorded, produced and released under the auspices of those labels.
In 1992, North/South Consonance launched its own label. The North/South Recordings catalogue now comprises over 60 CD albums, distributed worldwide by NAXOS and available for streaming and download through the Alexander Press Classical Music Library and the NAXOS Music Library. North/South albums are also available through internet retail outlets such as Amazon, ArkivMusic, Barnes & Noble, iTunes and Presto Classical. Often, these discs feature compositions written expressly for our musicians and premiered as part of our NYC concerts. Reviews in Gramophone, The American Record Guide and Fanfare Magazine have given North/South Recordings consistent high marks.
Take note of the eight different programs North/South Consonance is presenting during the current 2019-20 season — North/South’s 40th consecutive season of advocating on behalf of the music by living composers.
