Pamela Madsen

Pamela Madsen is a composer, sound artist, performer, and curator of new music. From her intimate chamber music creations focusing on image-music-text to her  electroacoustic mutli-media collaborations, collected archives of works by women in electroacoustic and organization of new music events she has created a body of work with a profound breadth of vision.  Her multi-media operas/music dramas and site-specific sonic environmental works have been commissioned and premiered by such new music performers and ensembles as: Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, TwoSense: Ashley Bathgate, and Lisa Moore, Bass-Baritone,  Nicholas Isherwood, pianists Vicki Ray, Eleonor Sandresky, Kathleen Supove, soundSCAPE, Zeitgeist, Ethel, Tony Arnold, Aiyun Huang, Jane Rigler, Trio Solisti, Verdehr Trio, ICE flutist Claire Chase, New York New Music Ensemble, California Ear Unit, JACK, Eclipse, Lyris, Formalist and Arditti String Quartets, multi-media collaborations with IMAX filmmaker Greg MacGillivray, Arctic photographer Camille Seaman, video artist Quintan Ana Wikswo, Jimena Sarno and visual artist Judy Chicago. With a Ph.D. in Composition from UCSD with Brian Ferneyhough, Doctoral studies in Music Theory at Yale University, Post-Doctoral Research at IRCAM and certified in Deep Listening with Pauline Oliveros, her work encompasses rich, complex and diverse perspectives. With awards from National Endowment for the Arts, New Music USA, Alpert Award Panelist, with invited guest composer residencies at MacDowell Colony, UCross, International Women’s Studies Center, New Mexico, Royal Danish Academy of Music, Music Across Borders tour of Russia,  she is a frequent guest lecturer, performer and invited scholar at festivals and universities world-wide. Currently, she is curator of the Annual New Music Festival, World Electro-Acoustic Listening Room Project, InterArts Collaborative Projects,  Director of the New Music Ensemble at Cal State Fullerton where she is Professor of Music Composition.

Commissioned and premiered by musicians from soundSCAPE, Tony Arnold, soprano, Jane Rigler, flute, Thomas Rosenkranz piano, Aiyun Huang, percussion, March 1, 2013, Cal State Fullerton New Music Festival: Voice in the 21st Century. This work explores Marie Curie’s passion for the invisible– her discovery of radioactive elements which ultimately led to her husband’s and her own demise.
