George Peabody, America’s first great international financier and philanthropist, founded the Peabody Institute in Baltimore in 1857 to enrich the cultural lives of Baltimore’s residents. Today, Peabody trained musicians exert a profound influence on the musical life of the world, performing on the stages of major concert halls across the globe. Peabody students and graduates give back to the community as performers, conductors, choir directors, composers, audio engineers, teachers, critics and scholars. The Institute consists of the degree-granting Peabody Conservatory and the Peabody Preparatory, one of the nation’s first and largest community music schools.
The Peabody Institute nurtures talent and creativity; provides aspiring musicians with the skills to sustain professional careers; fosters lifelong involvement in music and dance; and prepares students in artistic performance at the highest level, offering inspiration and enlightenment to regional, national, and international audiences. The Institute provides creative opportunities through instruction, performance, and community engagement, preparing students to become active members of society and to realize their potential as leaders of the next generation of performing artists. Embodied in this is Peabody’s outreach philosophy which includes a commitment to equitable access to what the Peabody Institute offers. The Institute is dedicated to attracting a diverse student body and engaging the greater Baltimore Community through over nine-hundred annual low cost or free public performances.
