Philip Mantione

Los Angeles, CA

Philip Mantione is a Los Angeles-based sound artist, composer, sound designer, guitarist, computer musician, educator, writer and multimedia artist whose career spans over two decades. His work includes music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, computer, fixed media, interactive performance, multimedia and sound installation, and music and sound design for experimental video. He writes custom software to meld field recordings, samples and computer-generated sounds into unique sonic textures. Through the extrapolation, superimposition and integration of external structures, data sets and found sounds, he sculpts musical forms that provide the framework for engaging and unexpected content. He is the recipient of two Meet the Composer grants and a recent commission from New Music USA for Riverside Whistles and Bells, an extended site-specific piece for hand bell choir, carillon and live electronics.

Mantione’s music has been performed at venues such as Merkin Concert Hall, NYC; Bing Theater, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Centre de Cultura Contemporània (Barcelona, Spain); FILE Festival (Sao Paulo, Brazil); and Festival Futura (France). In 2018, he was selected as an Artist-in-Residence at the renowned Djerassi Resident Artist Program in California. He currently teaches courses in audio software and technology, acoustics and sound design at the Los Angeles College of Music and Mt. San Antonio College, and is a contributing author of software reviews, articles, and video tutorials for The Pro Audio Files.

Memory Hole

The title of this fixed electronic piece is a reference to the novel, 1984 by George Orwell and relates to the idea of rewriting history in a way that benefits or validates the current power structure.

A 16 channel version was premiered at the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival in June 2016 and it has since been presented at the FILE 2018 Festival | FILE HYPERSONICA (Sau Paulo, Brazil – 2018) and Zeppelin 2018 at the Centre de Cultura Contemporánia de Barcelona (Spain).

Social Immune System

This work was created using the field recordings I made at the Occupy LA demonstrations (October 15, 2011) in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Included are voices from the protest including John Densmore (x-drummer from the Doors), Peter Joseph (founder of the Zeitgeist movement), text from a poem by Etheridge Knight, text written and read by Joseph including a quote by John McMurtry, which inspired the title.

A16-Channel version was included in the ZEPPELIN 2011 at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona – 2011.

Traffic for Strings

Traffic for Strings is a string orchestra piece based on a field recording of traffic sounds made in NYC. Pitches of car horns and other sounds in the environment were transcribed and durations were expanded before orchestrating for strings. This is an excerpt from a performance by the S.E.M. Ensemble conducted by Petr Kotik at Merkin Concert Hall (NYC) in 2005.
