WHO   IS   SOUND   ENERGY?

Sound Energy is a dynamic, Boston-based string trio committed to exploring new sounds, new collaborations, and new music. Established in 2013, Sound Energy members Micah Brightwell (violin), Samuel Kelder (viola) and Benjamin Swartz (cello) are constantly searching for ways to push the traditional violin-viola-cello combination to represent the bold, daring voices of 20th- & 21st-century composers.

With a repertoire spanning Anton Webern to Andrew Norman, Sound Energy stands at the forefront of a new generation in contemporary music with ambitious upcoming projects including tours, residencies, and large-scale commissions – all in a continued effort to explore the energy of sound.  SE has worked closely with award-winning composers Jeffrey Mumford, Marti Epstein, and Tamar Diesendruck; has commissioned rising stars John Aylward, Anthony Green, Noam Faingold, Evan Kassof, Daniel T. Lewis, and Daniel Miller; and has performed on the Equilibrium Concert Series, Advent Library Series, Signature Series, and conducted residencies at Dartmouth College, Clark University, and this spring at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Highlights of the 2016-17 season included four world premiere performances; a joint concert with bass clarinet-marimba duo Transient Canvas; a portrait concert in collaboration with Castle of our Skins featuring the music of Jeffrey Mumford with support from a New Music USA grant; a performance on the Signature Series in Cleveland; and a guest artist feature at The Boston Conservatory performing the music of Marti Epstein. Focused on bringing familiarity and new sounds to new audiences, SE brings the sound worlds of Xenakis and Scelsi to living rooms and concerts halls alike.

Sound Energy members hail from as far as New Zealand with studies in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Germany. As individuals, they’ve performed internationally and with ensembles such as the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Callithumpian Consort, A Far Cry, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars. They’ve attended festivals including Lucerne, Aspen, Tanglewood, and Kneisel Hall, and hold degrees from the Royal Academy of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, Peabody Conservatory, Johns Hopkins University, Rice University, Mannes School of Music, and University of Houston.
