Wojtek Blecharz (Voytek Blehash)
Born in Gdynia (Poland) in 1981, he graduated with honors from Frederic Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in composition at University of California in San Diego— a centre specializing in composition and performance of contemporary music. With Paweł Mykietyn, he co-organizes the Instalakcje music festival in Warsaw’s Nowy Theatre. His work includes orchestral, chamber, solo and choral pieces, as well as dance and theatre music. On the latter, he collaborates with Jacek Łumiński and the Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom. He has also composed music for companies such as Kokoro Dance (Vancouver), City Dance Ensemble (Washington), Coming Back to The Roots (Philadelphia), BalletMet (Columbus, Ohio), Theatre of Witness (Philadelphia), Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw, and Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk. In 2012, he received a stipend-prize “for perfection in music composition” at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, and in 2013 he was selected as one of winners of the IMPLUS International Composition Competition in Graz (Austria). In 2012 he was nominated for the Passport Award for classical music of the Polityka weekly, in 2013 – to the PKN Orlen Prize “Poles with Verve” in Art and Culture and to the Polish Radio Channel Three Yearly Award “Culture Man of the Year.”
Transcryptum is a site specific ‘opera-installation’ commissioned by Grand Theater-National Opera in Warsaw. The premiere took place on May 23rd 2013 in Warsaw. The piece is scored for one voice, 7 instruments and electronics.
