12th Annual Carlsbad Music Festival

12th Annual Festival of "adventurous music by the beach"

Overview

“Carlsbad Music Festival has quickly made a name for itself as one of the best single gatherings of diverse, avant-garde musicians in Southern California.”
– San Diego CityBeat

Carlsbad Music Festival is a nationally renown 3-day summer celebration of “adventurous music by the beach”. The 12th annual Festival was held on Friday-Sunday, August 28-30 in the charming seaside Village of Carlsbad. The Festival drew an audience of over 4500 community members and cultural tourists, and featured performances by some of California’s most creative musicians. Over 60 performances by dozens of artists were offered free to the public, in addition to 3 ticketed Mainstage concerts.

See full details of the event, photos, marketing materials, reviews, and more here.

The Festival programming was an eclectic mix of creative and adventurous music ranging from contemporary classical, to indie rock, to world music, to jazz, to musicians who work across genres and fall between the cracks. Performances took place at venues throughout the charming seaside Village of Carlsbad including parks, churches, music stores, art galleries, and even parking lots.

Performances to be supported by this grant included the following artists and collaborators:

Todd Reynolds: New York-based violinist and composer performed two sets including music by himself, Steve Reich, Michael Gordon, David Lang, Michael Lowenstern, and Ingram Marshall.

Vicki Ray: Los Angeles-based pianist performed Steve Reich Piano Counterpoint, Somei Satoh Incarnation II, Donnacha Dennehy Stainless Staining, and was joined by Todd Reynolds for Meredith Monk Gotham Lullaby.

HOCKET: Los Angeles-based piano duo performed music by David Lang, Tristan Perich, and world premieres by Kettle Corn New Music composers Alex Weiser, Ryan Harper, Emily Cooley, and Aaron Holloway-Nahum. Jim Chute of The San Diego Union-Tribune wrote, “Just their 20 minutes was worth the trip to Carlsbad. Their teamwork was exemplary, their playing was a delight.”

Now Hear Ensemble: Santa Barbara-based ensemble performed a concert focused on audio and video feedback as a creative tool, including music by Joshua Carro, Anthony Garcia, and Michael Beil.

Swarmius: San Diego-based electro-classical ensemble performed works by composer Joseph Waters, including 3 world premieres. Reviewing their performance, Ken Herman of San Diego Story praised the “intensely layered, ruggedly contrapuntal and fiendishly virtuosic works.”

Adrianne Pope: Los Angeles-based violinist and composer performed two solo violin sets including pieces by Annie Gosfield, Yoshihisa Taira, Iannis Xenakis, Andrew McIntosh and Martin Bresnick. The San Diego Union-Tribune review called her playing “fluid, communicative… compelling.” In addition, she led a performance of her sound installation for 6 amplified hand-cranked music boxes.

Paula Karolak: San Francisco-based violist performed a solo set including Christopher Theofanidis Flow my Tears.

Stephen Solook: San Diego-based percussionist performed a solo set including the West Coast premiere of Nicholas Deyoe Lullaby, and Chinary Ung Cinnabar Heart.

Jennifer Bewerse: Los Angeles-based cellist performed a solo set including Carolyn Shaw In Manus Tuas.

Elizabeth Kennedy Bayer: Phoenix-based flautist and composer played her own music in addition to compositions by Jenn Kirby, Jay Batzner, and Stephen Bachicha.

Aurora Borealis: San Diego-based soprano and percussion duo performed music by John Cage and Stuart Saunders Smith.
