I’m very excited to have completed the video editing for my project Elicit Inquest. I have uploaded a condensed version of the live performance from May 14, which was just under an hour, down to fifteen minutes with all seven compositions included. I will be releasing a full audio recording of the Elicit Inquest suite in the coming months. Much gratitude to the New Music USA community and to all involved with the project; Jeff Watts, Orlando le Fleming, Adriana Mateo, Glen Forrest and my live audience in Easton.

The project dates have been moved to May 14-16 due to the musicians schedules. We look forward to presenting the new compositions and I will publish updates with details closer to the recording date.

Sincere thanks to New Music USA for supporting this recording project. Also to the American Composers Orchestra for the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Jazz Composers Orchestra Institue 2012, which lead me to find out about New Music USA.

Thank you to Jeff “Tain” Watts and Orlando le Fleming for being a part of my project and supporting me musically for the past five years.

Overview

Elicit Inquest is a collection of seven new works by composer Laura Watts for the ensemble The Lyra Tree: Laura Watts (pocket trumpet), Orlando le Fleming (double bass) and Jeff “Tain” Watts (drum set and percussion).

PLAN: The trio will rehearse, record and perform the new works at Sanctuary Studios in Easton, PA. A live recording of 150 person capacity will be open free of charge to the studio’s local residential community and the neighboring Lafayette College. The live recording  session will also be filmed for potential live stream and edited to create promotional videos.

  • 3/20/14   Rehearsal/sound set
  • 3/21/14   Studio recording
  • 3/22/14   Record in front of a live studio audience.

MUSIC: The seven compositional platforms, are each identities for musical pursuance, inspired by selected short autobiographical dialogues of Duke Ellington from his book “Music is my Mistress”.

The compositions feature intricate improvisation set within a framework of structure and thematic triggers for transition or departure, written for these three musicians specifically. Despite the elusive word “improvisation”being used here, the music has a moral compass for sonic euphony, not in a commercial sense, but for the performers own realization and grounding, as related to the relevant musical dispositions.

For the composer’s purpose, thematic triggers are devices used to; move between tempos, metrically modulate, initiate freedom surges, transition tonal centers, cue melodic passages and allow for musical asylum. These devices can be assigned to a particular player, set at designated junctures or available to all for open utilization. Notation for the triggers ranges from traditional nomenclature, to numerical ratios, symbols and interpersonal dialogue. Utilizing triggers shifts the musician’s control, so as to step beyond composed structures and physical cues, allowing the musical material itself to be a defining uncertainty. This stimulates a reaction to the trigger, potentially making the result a deeper relation to the compositional pursuance than any notated/premediated passage.

An intention with the use of triggers is to flex the gap between traditional “jazz” improvisation and contemporary classical extemporization. Also to allow for a fun, relaxed environment conjucive to musical creation.

OUTCOMES: The new music will be documented, thus enabling public access to the music and wider exposure for the group. The ensemble will participate in three consecutive days of intense musical dialogue, enhancing the group cohesion. The local community of Easton PA will be invited to engage in a progressive and experimental art form presented in a beautiful historic church setting.
