SF Chronicle: A wide world of influences on clarinetist Derek Bermel’s music
Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle chats with Derek Bermel about his 2014/15 Featured Composer residency with New Century Chamber Orchestra and looks ahead to his new work Murmurations.
The New Century Chamber Orchestra is partnering with the Grammy-nominated composer Derek Bermel for the commission of his new work, Murmurations, as part of his 2014-15 Featured Composer Residency.
New Century’s Featured Composer Residency Program was established during Music Director Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg’s inaugural season to give structure to the organization’s commitment to the creation and performance of new music. In the 2014-15 Season, Derek Bermel will serve as New Century’s seventh Featured Composer, following Clarice Assad, William Bolcom, Mark O’Connor, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Lera Auerbach, and Michael Daugherty.
To increase the national impact of the program, New Century has placed an emphasis on recording, broadcasting, and touring the commissioned works. This season, New Century has taken the next step to broaden its commitment to expanding contemporary string chamber orchestra repertoire, by establishing a national commissioning consortium. The member organizations of the New Century commissioning consortium for Murmurations are the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, River Oaks Chamber Orchestra of Houston, and A Far Cry of Boston.
Bermel’s Featured Composer Residency began in September 2014, with the presentation of three works by Bermel: A Short History of the Universe (as related by Nima Arkani-Hamed), Oct Up, and Silvioudades. The San Francisco Chronicle praised the performance, calling Bermel, “a brilliantly versatile composer and clarinetist,” and the music, “characteristically skillful and imaginative.”
New Century will present the west-coast premiere of Bermel’s Murmurations in May 2015.
