Our weekend of events at the 92Y was amazing!  Beginning May 9, our first performance installation for Fridays at Noon was live streamed by Dance and New Media.

That evening following the show, Edward Henkel hosted his MovementTalks, Unpacking the Underscore.  He graciously introduced Nancy Stark Smith who went on to describe the Underscore and to invite a very enthusiastic audience to find some of the states in the Underscore by participation.  We, the Glimpse 2 dancers, and the audience moved all together and had a beautiful dance.  One woman felt happily compelled to move along on the floor even though she had just broken her toe that very morning.

Several of those people returned for the Saturday 3pm performance installation and for the Sunday Community Underscore.

Mike Vargas’s music was a true pleasure to have all along.  His invention and contextualization is singular.

More to come by way of pictures and links and hopefully some video!

“Glimpsers” on final day at SILO.  We have had an amazing time out in the beautiful quiet practicing the Underscore in preparation for our Harkness Dance Center performances.  It is so great to be able to sink our teeth into the Underscore over 4 full days and feel our sense of ensemble grow.  We’re excited to share our dancing next week.

Glimpse 2!

Overview

“Glimpse” frames the practice of the Underscore for an audience.

Underscore is a group improvisational form that dance artists around the world have come to love. Underscore begins as a group of dancers assemble. They begin by simply walking; this activity gives way to a prolonged period of stillness out of which emerges spontaneous composition based on contact improvisation and the wealth of somatic experiences each practitioner brings. The group finds resolution together and discussion follows. Underscore produces highly physical dancing as group and small ensemble forms emerge and dissolve.

Underscore is comprised of over 50 symbols, each representing a particular idea within an ordering framework. The dancers use the ideas in various ways to organize themselves as the composition arises. Surprising episodes, solos, trios, and duets emerge; sometimes the whole group finds one voice.

In 2000, a french dancer, Claire Filmon, conceived of a Global Underscore to celebrate the summer equinox. Every year since, sites all around the world synchronize across time zones to Underscore together. A Global Underscore blog organizes the information. In 2013, over 60 sites registered in 22 countries around the world.

Contact improvisation pioneer, Nancy Stark Smith and renowned experimental musician, Mike Vargas, host regular Underscores in Northampton and around the world; New York City’s Underscore community is growing, and, with it, grows interest in sharing the form with an audience.

San Francisco based dancers Ronja Ver and Jen Chien, and Nancy Stark Smith conceived of “Glimpse” (1). In 2012, “Glimpse” was the first of its kind to organize dancers for a retreat to practice with the intention of performing the Underscore for an audience. Mike Vargas joined at DanceGround Keriac for several rehearsals and three performances followed.

Now, New York City’s Harkness Dance Center has boldy made Glimpse 2 part of its spring 2014 season. Nancy Stark Smith and Brandin Steffensen will retreat with a group of eleven other dance artists for a six-day residency, followed by rehearsals at the 92nd Street Y to install Underscore in Buttenwieser Hall with musician Mike Vargas. Vargas will play his original compositions for each performance.

Mike Vargas’s music is vital in the performance of the Underscore. It may contrast or enhance the composition, and sustains the qualities in the improvisation. Its presence allows for another dimension of compositional cohesion within the form.

Nancy Stark Smith, Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, and Daniel Lepkoff were the seminal group who, in the early 1970’s, toured performing the experiments that gave rise to what is today known as Contact Improvisation. Nancy began teaching in 1975, the same year she founded the world-renowned dance journal Contact Quarterly. In the late 1980’s, she processed her years of teaching contact improvisation with her students to develop the Underscore.

Underscore promotes community, shared movement research and cultural exchange, and is a forum for professional dancers and people who love to move together. The organizers and performers of Glimpse hope that as audiences see this work, they may find insights into how people relate through dance outside the bounds of choreography.

This is a video created by Jesse Johnson, organizer of the 2011 & 2012 Global Underscores. The video, set to Mike Vargas’s music, is a time lapse edit including stills she took of this private practice of the Underscore.

“Glimpse 2” is a project about researching how performing the practice of the Underscore may inform its content. As an ensemble of performers, we, the members of “Glimpse 2” ask ourselves “What is it to perform this practice and reveal the composition that inevitably emerges for people who have come to witness it?”
