IlluminArts, Miami’s Art Song and Vocal Chamber Music Series, is thrilled to announce the upcoming tour of David Lang’s 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning composition, “the little match girl passion” originally created at Pérez Art Museum Miami from May 31-June 2, 2016.
American artist and opera director R. B. Schlather stages a 5-hour, one-day-only performance installation of Oscar-nominated American composer David Lang’s the little match girl passion hosted at Chelsea gallerist Jack Shainman’s Kinderhook location.
Called in the New Yorker “One of the most original and moving scores of recent years,” American composer David Lang’s celebrated, haunting 2008 Pulitzer-Prize winning the little match girl passion, based on the classic Danish parable by Hans Christian Anderson, becomes the material for Hudson, NY resident R. B. Schlather’s gallery performance. Originally commissioned by Miami-based Art Song and Chamber Music Series IlluminArts and performed over a week at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (2016), Schlather brings his innovative, accessible approach to staging classical music to this horrifying and beautiful musical composition. Reformatting the relationship to performers and the duration of a traditional classical music concert, over 5-hours the staging rehearsal will be performed by Schlather, music director Amanda Crider, four singers and one percussionist as an activation of The School free and open to the public during gallery hours. The visibility of process is Schlather’s primary concern, creating a unique opportunity for spectators to engage with classical music as living sculpture, in dialogue with larger themes about performance, intimacy, and access.
Featuring soprano Anne-Carolyn Bird, countertenor Brennan Hall, tenor Karim Sulayman, bass Zachary James, percussionist Michael Zell, and costumes by Schlather’s regular collaborator Terese Wadden, this performance will be presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in December 2016. This performance is free and open to the public noon to 5 PM. The performers will take 15-minute breaks every 90 minutes, culminating in a final showing around 4:15 PM.

IlluminArts, Miami’s Art Song and Vocal Chamber Music series, is thrilled to present performances of David Lang’s 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning composition, “the little match girl passion”in an innovative, staged installation inspired by the work of Colombian sculptor Doris Salcedo and directed by R. B. Schlather at museums around the country. The staging will be created as a live performance event over one week at the Perez Art Museum Miami from May 27 – 31, 2016, with rehearsals open to museum visitors, and streamed live online, creating a spontaneous interplay of process and audience, and culminating in a free public presentation June 2, 2016 at 7:00PM. This collaboration promises to explode perceptions of how classical music can be consumed in the 21st century, and brings a world-class musical event to audiences in South Florida and beyond. Following the initial presentation, IlluminArts will take this installation on tour. Each additional venue will present a one day installation of rehearsals concluding in an evening performance.
Renowned director R. B. Schlather will stage the performance. The New York Times has described Schlather as “having a gift at drawing out vivid performances,” and Opera News declared, “Schlather created an intense, accessible, immersive experience that illuminated the emotional heart of [the] work….the entire theatrical experience, taken as a whole, was revelatory.”
Composer, David Lang earned the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for “the little match girl passion.” This ground-breaking piece is scored for four solo voices and percussion, and tells Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of a poor young girl struggling with abuse and poverty, but retaining faith, hope, and ultimately redemption. The story is suffused with opposites; a beautiful past with a bitter present, the struggles of poverty and the redemption of hope.
Doris Salcedo’s sculptures address the problems of social injustice, suffering and trauma that is part of Colombian history. The resulting pieces engage with multiple dualities at once—strength and fragility, the ephemeral and the enduring—and bear elements of healing and reparation in the careful, laborious process of their making.
The mission of IlluminArts is to present programs of music in spaces where visual art is displayed, and to draw inspiration from the visual art in the space. Created as a performance series in Miami, FL, this will be the first touring project undertaken by IlluminArts. Knight Foundation receiving a $20,000 matching grant to help fund the performance at the Perez Art Museum Miami, in addition to a grant from the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs.
