Invisible Anatomy – Illumination
Invisible Anatomy’s Spring 2019 show Illumination – the fourth show the group has created together – is an evening-length, conceptually unified piece drawing on classical, pop, jazz, experimental rock, performance art, and theater; composed and performed by the group’s five members, with visual, video, and theatrical elements by theater artist Michael McQuilken.
The show explores the practical, aesthetic, and ideological applications of light – our primary means of orienting ourselves and conveying information – as a way to examine conflicting viewpoints, the limits of language and communication, and moments when perceptual information does not match up with our expectations and understanding.
Michael McQuilken creates theatrical scenarios that are complex, intense, and nuanced as well as direct and beautiful. He’s also a musician himself, and integrates music and visuals in a way that few do. We’re also extremely excited to partner with Tribeca New Music, an organization with a long history of presenting music that falls between the cracks of genre, and with the cell, an incredible incubator for new theatrical and musical works.
As with our debut album last year, a big priority for us right now is high-quality documentation of high quality performances of our music. The fact that we’re doing three performances means a higher level of comfort and familiarity with the music than we would achieve in a single premiere performance. Michael will be filming all three performances and editing together the best takes, resulting in a beautiful document of the show, which will be our primary means of booking gigs for the group in the next two seasons.
