We are overwhelmingly pleased to announce that KCET Artbound has been awarded an LA Area Emmy for their documentary “Invisible Cities: An Opera for Headphones.”
Director Joris Debeij, Executive Producer Juan Devis, Producer Matthew Crotty and Co-Producer Drew Tewksburry all collaborated very closely with our creative team to create a document of the creation of the opera. Their film features interviews with our whole team; interviews with film, architecture, music, and literature critics; as well as 20 minutes of a staged performance interspersed throughout the film. You can watch the whole film above.
In addition, you can view more short films and essays by the creative team at this link: http://www.kcet.org/arts/artbound/counties/los-angeles/artbound-special-episode-invisible-cities.html
In other Invisible Cities news, we head to Citrus Arts studio in September to record the opera. The original cast and orchestra will be recorded under the baton of The Industry music director Marc Lowenstein, and will be produced by Invisible Cites lead sound engineer Nick Tipp. The recording will be released later this year!
Industry artistic director Yuval Sharon is collaborating with graphic designer Traci Larson to create a unique and special packaging for a limited edition physical release. More on this soon!
We are so excited to move forward with the recording and can’t wait to post photos and video clips from the sessions!

Overview
Hailed as a “a delicate and beautiful opera” that “could be, and should be, done anywhere” by the LA Times; “a subtle and beautiful musical meditation on travel, cultural differences, death, and memory” by LA Weekly; and “the opera of the future” by Wired Magazine, Invisible Cities is an opera by Christopher Cerrone based on the novel by Italo Calvino.
In 2013, Invisible Cities received its world premiere production directed by Yuval Sharon under the joint auspices of The Industry, LA Dance Project, and Sennheiser Electronics. The work is currently being performed 22 times to sold out audiences in LA’s Union Station, where the audience is invited freely to roam the space while the opera is broadcast live into wireless headphones. The score and production have received nearly universal acclaim, sparking a social media phenomenon with over 850 photos posted on Instagram alone.
Now, the same cast of singers and instrumentalists will come together to record the opera, under the production of Nick Tipp—lead sound mixer for the live production of Invisible Cities. The cast will record the album in two days in March 2014 at the Bridge Studios in LA under the direction of Marc Lowenstein—music director for The Industry. Having performed the work so many times, the cast and instrumentalists will be intimately familiar with the work.
The Industry, who have now produced 3 major productions in LA, will be expanding their reach into professional recording, releasing Invisible Cities as their first CD and digital release. Sharon, The Industry’s Artistic Director, will serve as executive producer for the album. The album will be digitally distributed by Record Union, making the work available on iTunes, Spotify and other digital sources. Emily Motherwell will serve as lead publicity for the project and will coordinate with the Industry’s PR team, MPRM Communications.
In coordination with the release of Invisible Cities in November 2014, The Industry will begin their international tour of Invisible Cities, where the work will be performed in train stations and other public places throughout the world. The city of Bordeaux and Opéra National de Bordeaux are planning on presenting the work in November 2014, with future possible performances with Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Metropolitan Museum. The recording will be available at each performance, so the audience can bring the experience of listening to the opera on headphones into their everyday life, re-imagining the experience of seeing The Industry’s production of Invisible Cities wherever they go.
