The Impact of the Project

Posted on May 26, 2015 by Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras

Thanks in part to support from New Music USA, CYSO partnered with Third Coast Percussion to create a video recording of David T. Little’s RADIANT CHiLD.  CYSO’s Encore Chamber Orchestra, made up of high school aged musicians, had the unique opportunity to work closely with Third Coast Percussion to perfect this work both in live performance and in a professional video recording.

On December 7, 2014, the ensembles gave just the second public performance of RADIANT CHiLD to an appreciative audience at the Harris Theater in Chicago. An audio recording of the concert will be available for download shortly on CYSO’s Instant Encore page (www.instantencore.com/cyso). Then on December 9, the musicians, led by Music Director Allen Tinkham, created a video recording of the piece. The video was completed in April 2015 is now available to view on YouTube at this link

In addition to their work with the Encore Chamber Orchestra, Third Coast Percussion also performed original compositions written by students in CYSO’s Composition Seminar during a special workshop.  This gave young composers the unique opportunity to write for percussion ensemble, hear their works performed by professional musicians, and get direct feedback from those musicians.  A picture from the workshop is included in this post.

As an organization committed to the education of young musicians, this project offered CYSO a great opportunity to not only bring new music to the stage and beyond, but also provide students with the unique experience of creating a studio recording. CYSO’s artistic staff ensure that CYSO students can be successful 21st-century musicians, should they choose to pursue music as a career, by programming contemporary works, performing in renowned concert halls, collaborating with leading musicians, and encouraging teamwork, personal responsibility and communication skills.

The Project

Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO) and Third Coast Percussion will partner in a residency during fall and winter 2014 to bring David T. Little’s Radiant Child to the public through a performance and recording, as well as provide mentorship to young musicians and composers through masterclasses and workshops. As a part of this residency, CYSO’s Encore Chamber Orchestra and the ground-breaking ensemble Third Coast Percussion will perform Radiant Child on December 7, 2014 at the Harris Theater in Chicago.  This will be just the second public performance of this work for percussion quartet and chamber orchestra.

In order to expand the audience for this collaboration even further, CYSO and Third Coast Percussion will create a video recording of the work on December 9, 2014 in Chicago.  This video of Radiant Child will be significant as it represents the first time the piece has been recorded, either as an audio or video recording. The video will be available to the general public for free on CYSO’s YouTube channel, allowing CYSO, Third Coast Percussion and David T. Little to reach audiences far beyond the concert hall.

Initially founded as one ensemble by a group of students and parents in 1946, CYSO now boasts six traditional orchestras, a Steel Orchestra program, an advanced chamber orchestra, chamber music instruction, theory and composition classes, a masterclass series featuring renowned musicians and music education and access for Chicago Public School students and teachers through the Music Pathways program.  In 2014-2015, nearly 500 students between the ages of 6 and 18 in CYSO’s ensembles will rehearse weekly from September 2014 – June 2015 and give at least 20 public concerts throughout the Chicago area. CYSO artistic staff are committed to programming contemporary music to provide young musicians with well-rounded orchestral training and to introduce audiences to new and innovative works.  CYSO also frequently commissions pieces and provides opportunities for students to work directly with living composers, and has received twelve ASCAP awards for Adventurous Programming (1994, 1995, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014).

Encore Chamber Orchestra, a 70-member ensemble, is an honors group accessible only by invitation of Music Director Allen Tinkham. Encore is designed to provide specialized training and performance opportunities to serious career-track musicians. Hailed by The New Yorker as “vibrant” and “superb,” Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering exciting performances for audiences of all kinds. Composer David T. Little’s potently dramatic music draws upon his experience as a rock drummer, and fuses classical and popular idioms to powerful effect. His concertino for percussion quartet and chamber orchestra, Radiant Child, was commissioned by the New World Symphony in 2011.
